Red gum is a sign that something is not quite right inside our mouth.  It could mean many things – gum irritation, infection, or some other medical condition.  Whatever the underlying cause may be, we are far better off making an appointment with our dentist for professional advice and proper treatment and/or procedures applied to correct the condition.  Almost always, red gums are due to accumulation of bacteria in the mouth and the delicate balance of microbes, minerals, saliva, etc. has been disrupted.  When this happens, our gums will sure let us know by its color.

However there are some conditions that lead to discoloration of our gums, such as improperly fit dental works.  When dentures do not fit comfortably inside the mouth, the ill-fitting could turn the gums red.  If not corrected by your dentist, it will bring soreness to the mouth making it difficult to eat and speak.  Eating the correct foods are necessary to stay clear of gum infections however when we cannot eat because our dentures are awkwardly fit, then definitely get back with your dentist.

Our gums may also have chemical reactions with the products we use for our mouth such as toothpaste and the mouthwash.  Commercial products, more often than not, have ingredients that are not essential in cleaning out our oral cavity.  With these elements, it may even jeopardize our dental health.  When these products produce allergy upshot, discontinue use of the item.

Red gums treatment would vary based on the root cause that is why it is important to see your dentist or oral hygienist on the first sign of swollen red gums.  They are the best people to advice you on medications to take, or if you need to undergo dental procedures, or even refer you to other medical professionals.  And perhaps in the meantime that you are waiting to see our dentist you may use baking soda on your gums to ease the pain and let the swelling, if any, subside.  Gargling with a saline solution could also alleviate pain.

Proper oral hygiene, good nutrition and avoiding tobacco products will let you have a head start with red gums.  If you follow an oral regimen of brushing, flossing and mouthwash rinsing at least twice in a day then you’d be able to keep red gums and gum diseases at bay.  Also let your dentist know if you have dental works that fits uncomfortably to get this corrected immediately.  Being aware of the above information will help us fight off gum diseases for a beautiful smile.
